The way I work (part I & II)
Design philosophy
Design is the process of creating a comfortable environment for a person through objects. Using these objects, a person learns about the world around him.
Watches are not only a way to know the time, but also style, fashion, art. That is why the watch is, in addition to an interesting self-sufficient mechanical world, also a reflection of the taste, ambitions, aspirations of both the brand and the buyer who believed in it.
Our design philosophy is a functional combination of art and storytelling. It is super important to have a comfortable product not only for the wrist but also for easy reading of the dial. The other important thing is the story that supports the model and can be interestingly described. This is an opportunity to touch intelligence and emotions.
For us, good design has to be beautiful and intelligent. The product is not the only thing that interests buyers. It is important to tell what your watch is about, what story do they tell?
Design Process
You may have noticed that conservative watch design has become the norm now, with fewer risks for brands and sometimes old-fashioned case shapes. On the other hand, as a counterforce, more sci-fi watch brands are emerging.
At one time, the boring forms of "rationalism" of the 1970s (characterized by strict geometric shapes and muted earthy shades) eventually led to the Hi Tech style. Any form in itself is not irrelevant. It is the same language as text or music. The watch's shape is the brand's language, conveying philosophy, functionality, and emotion.
The design process is a path to a result. Each of the stages is critically important, and therefore, we always try to discuss each step with customers.
We are using design flow, which can be divided into 2 major parts: 2D development and 3D development. 2D is a stage when we work with values, meanings, implications, and stories of the brand and of the models in particular. Lots of sketches, and 2D Photoshop images to define the look of the watch, and the proportions from different angles. The result is an image of the watch. The result of the work is images of watches from different angles and several color combinations.
3D development is the next step when we take the flat image of the watch and put it in volume. Using CAD programs (like Solidworks or Rhino), we are working on the construction of the watch and can print the case to check the ergonomics. The result of the 3D work is a project ready for production.
We are interested in making the watch work according to the plan, so that it strengthens the brand and sells well.
